    Don Caldwell, president of local non-profit Broadway Festivals' board of directors, had made it a personal quest to breathe life back into a 4th on Broadway closing concert that has not been produced since 2010. The concert and fireworks extravaganza - the 27th annual 4th on Broadway's major closing events - were doomed by severe thunderstorms on July 4. Rescheduled for Sunday, the concert fell victim to an unexpected, equipment-damaging storm that dumped nearly 1.5 inches of rain on Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport in short order Sunday afternoon.

    Lubbock is about 1/2 inch above average for precipitation for the year after the rainfall that fell over the South Plains since the beginning of July. As of Wednesday evening, 0.85 of an inch were reported for July 1, .71 of an inch on July 2, .10 of an inch on July 3, and 1.25 inches for July 4, according to meteorologist Gary Skwira with the National Weather Service in Lubbock.

After a day of featuring a parade and street festivities, the Covenant Health and First Bank and Trust's Fourth of July Star Spangled Celebration Concert began at 7 p.m. The Reagor Dykes Autogroup Fireworks Extravaganza was scheduled to start at Mackenzie Park around 9:45 p.m., but organizers announced it was canceled around 8 p.m. and wrapped up the concert early.

CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 7 miles south of Claytonville to 7 miles southeast of Abernathy to near Reese Center to 6 miles southwest of Locketvilleto near Bronco, moving southeast at 40 mph. The West Texas Mesonet station at Sundown reported a wind gust to 64 mph and the station at Levelland reported 58 mph, both at 905 pm.

    Volunteers from the Lubbock-based chapter of the American Red Cross spent much of the weekend deployed in Anton as residents were left with significant damage to their homes and vehicles following severe storms Friday night. Laura Hann, executive director for the South Plains Region chapter of the American Red Cross, said the first call for assistance came at about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday when Anton residents were seeking assistance after golf-ball sized hail tore through their homes, making some of them unlivable as roofs were gone.
