A flood advisory was issued for Lubbock through 6:30 p.m. Tuesday as excessive runoff from brief but heavy rainfall caused flooding on some streets, underpasses and low-lying areas including around the Texas Tech campus and the South Plains Mall, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock.

    Fifteen students from across the South Plains will go head-to-head Saturday morning at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal 67th Annual Regional Spelling Bee. Students will meet for the old-fashioned spelling bee, with the winner of the regional bee advancing to the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.  The Lubbock bee will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, but viewers are encouraged to be seated prior to the start time.

    South Plains College saved its season a little more than two weeks ago, going from bubble team to an automatic berth in the men's basketball NJCAA Tournament. South Plains, in the unaccustomed role of Cinderella, won the NJCAA championship Saturday night with an 98-95 victory over College of Southern Idaho, raising the trophy at the end of a tumultuous season.  Texas Tech signee Deshawn Corprew scored 21 points, point guard Keith McGee supplied 20 and Isaiah Maurice and Chris Orlina had double-doubles for South Plains .
