    No member of the public turned out on Thursday afternoon to express concerns about advertised increases in water and sewer rates for the coming year. As a result, directors of the Halifax County Service Authority promptly approved the increased rates which will become effective on Jan. 1. Under the new rate schedule, water customers in the towns of South Boston and Halifax who use between 1 to 24,000 gallons bimonthly will pay $4.60 per 1,000 gallons.

    A three-vehicle crash on Thursday evening resulted in injuries to two drivers and $7,500 in damages to the vehicles involved. Shawnda D. Claiborne of South Boston, the driver of a 2005 Dodge Neon, was charged with failure to yield the right-of-way when her vehicle struck a 2006 Toyota Tacoma operated by Suzanne G. O'Hara of Halifax, 26. The mishap occurred at the intersection of Halifax Road and Green's Folly Road at 6:06 p.m. Upon impact with Claiborne's vehicle, O'Hara's Tacoma struck a third car, a 2004 Toyota Camry operated by 47 year old Stephanie R. Edmonds of South Boston.

South Boston Council members were alerted to the problem by Public Works Director Alan Auld, who spoke Monday at a Council meeting about recently-discovered damage to the smokestack.
