If presiding Judge Joel Cunningham pronounces the latter sentence, Terry's case will continue - with several avenues for appealing the decision due to the laborious nature of capital punishment proceedings in the U.S. "Each case in which a death sentence is imposed in Virginia causes an automatic appeal directly to the Virginia Supreme Court," explained Petra Haskins, chief deputy Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Danville and a member of the capital murder prosecution team that is seeking the death penalty for Terry.
