    During the summer of 1851 Joaquin Murietta was in San Jose where it was said he murdered a deputy sheriff of Santa Clara County who had made himself obnoxious by his persistent efforts to arrest members of Joaquin's gang. From there the gang went north to a cluster of tents about three miles from Marysville known as the Sonorian Camp.

    Today April 23, 2015 24 year-old Sunnyvale resident Brenda Barrera was arraigned on multiple counts involving the death of Maxsimiano Aldana a 78 year-old resident of Escalon. Barrerra was charged by Tuolumne County District Attorney Laura Krieg with: Second Degree Murder , Driving Under the Influence causing great bodily injury to 3 additional victims, and Gross Vehicular Manslaughter .

    In the category of Not the Smartest Criminal, two Tuolumne County residents were pulled over at around 2:00 a.m. on Friday March 6th. 58 year-old Lonnie Ray Pierce, from Jamestown and Sonora resident 39 year-old Kimberly Ann Hubbard were pulled over by a Tuolumne County Sheriff Deputy when a substantial amount of drugs were found.

    Because of the trouble in and around Sonora the issue of the Foreign Miners' Tax Law was brought before the State Supreme Court in June on a petition by the state attorney-general asking for a writ of quo warranto against the tax collector , L. A. Besancon , alleging that the Foreign Miners' Tax Law was unconstitutional and illegal and the exercise of the office of tax collector by Besancon an unwarrantable assumption of franchise and power. The court, however, decided it had no power to issue the writ and dismissed the petition.
