Bill Walker finds a third time the charm, the Kenai Peninsula will not have a voice on the Alaska Board of Fisheries, as the appointment of Robert Ruffner was voted down in a joint session of the Legislature held Sunday. Gov. Walker's first pick, Roland Maw, of Kasilof, withdrew from the nomination amid allegations of falsifying residency status in Montana.

    A man facing charges related to the homicide of 40-year-old Anchor Point resident Demian Sagerser will be tried by the Kenai Superior Court in the Homer Courtroom starting on April 27. Anchorage resident Demarqus Deshean Green, 23, has been indicted on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and tampering with evidence after Sagerser was found deceased at his Anchor Point home in 2012. According to Alaska State Troopers, Sagerser suffered two 9mm gunshot wounds to the torso.

    The leftovers from a recent conversation about food tax are being served up hot at a Kenai Peninsula Borough meeting to take place on March 17. This time, for the purpose of funding the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District "to the cap." In a memorandum to both Assembly president and members, Kenai Representative Blaine Gilman proposed an ordinance that would repeal the seasonal non-prepared food tax exemption for Soldotna, Seldovia and Homer.

    More than 1,000 people on the Southern Kenai Peninsula signed the petition, or referendum, to say no to winter sales tax on unprepared foods on the Peninsula composing more than one half of the signatures needed to place the issue on the October 2015 ballot. A total of 1,800 signatures has paved the way for the referendum to appear in the Kenai Peninsula Borough election, which if passed, will repeal ordinance 2008-28.
