    During a special meeting Monday night the Slatington Borough Council gave its official approval to the Veterans Memorial that is expected to be completed in November. The Veterans Memorial Committee broke ground on the monument's site July Fourth during the borough's annual Heritage Day Celebration in the Memorial Park.

    Nicole Marie Gruber, 24, of Slatington, was ejected from the vehicle, having been found laying on a grass area on the opposite side of the roadway from where the car came to rest on its roof. Gruber was transported to St. Luke's Fountain Hill by helicopter, where she was pronounced dead.

    A Slatington man was sentenced to a Carbon County prison term on Thursday after pleading guilty to two drug counts. Eric W. Peters, 34, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve three to 18 months in prison followed by one year of probation on a charge of possession of a controlled substance and one year probation on a possession of drug paraphernalia count with the terms running consecutively.

    The Lehigh County Coroner's Office said the deaths of two men in a home near Slatington on Wednesday night was a murder-suicide. Joseph S. Sommer, 48, of Northampton, was pronounced dead at 11:54 p.m., and Harry R. Bortz, 34, of Northampton, was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Craig Hanzl at a residence in the 6700 block of Route 873, Slatington, Washington Township.

    A reward is being offered for the return of a railroad signal light stolen earlier this month from the side of the D & L Trail south of Slatington. Lehigh Township Rails to Trails, along with David Ahn, are offering a $200 reward for the return of the railroad signal light, believed to have been taken May 11. A railroad buff, Ahn, of Northampton, restored the mast and the signal light a few years ago and was planning to restore the mast on the other side of the trail.

    Stephen Jay Dilcher, 37, of 117 Hillcrest Lane, Apartment D32, formerly of West Ridge Street in Nesquehoning, was arrested by Nesquehoning Police Chief Sean Smith following an investigation that began last April. According to the affidavit, Smith received a report from a 15-year-old girl's mother stating that her daughter was receiving inappropriate text messages through Facebook from Dilcher.
