One morning a reporter of this fine sheet was walking down Broadway with a cup of proudly served Starbucks coffee in hand. A visitor rushed up to her, grabbed her arm and exclaimed: "Thank God there's a Starbucks in this town!" After making their way more than 15 miles up the Chilkoot Trail, one hiker was dismayed to find that the experience wasn't quite what they thought it would be: "I was expecting to see real stairs on the Golden Staircase."

    The Alaska Power and Telephone Company has begun the process to install a new, 86-mile long fiber optic telecommunications cable through Lynn Canal. The $10 million project will link Skagway and Haines to existing cables in Juneau and will mean improved Internet connection in Skagway with faster bandwidth once the cable is turned on.

    This summer, three artists will pack their paint brushes, sketchbooks and cameras alongside some bear spray to spend two weeks trekking back and forth on the Chilkoot Trail as part of an artist in residency outreach program that is designed to bring the trail's history and beauty to new audiences near and far. The goal of the program is to "inspire an audience's curiosity about the Chilkoot Trail and national historical site as a place to visit," and to "communicate the history of the trail as the First Nation has used it, or in those two years of the Klondike Gold Rush," said Stella Patera, the public outreach officer for the Yukon field unit of Parks Canada.

Hosford, owner of Chilkoot Trail Outpost and chair of Skagway's Legislative District 33, was one of 28 Alaskan delegates to be sent to the RNC last week, and the only representative from Skagway.

    The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is seeking local sculptors to provide concept designs for a sculpture that will become the centerpiece of a new "Ton of Goods" exhibit on Broadway, directly across the street from the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park visitor center. The NPS hopes to contract with the winning contestant to provide a scale model for a large sculpture of a gold rush stampeder that will be installed as part of the agency's Centennial celebration.
