    Fentanyl, a drug exponentially stronger than heroin or morphine, can be fatal in small doses. Now, due to an influx of the drug into Ventura County from foreign manufacturers, overdoses are on the rise locally, according to the Ventura County Department of Public Health.

    National Park Service researchers discovered two litters of mountain lion kittens in the eastern Santa Susana Mountains in June 2016. A total of five kittens, three females and two males, were eartagged and returned to their respective dens.

    Oxnard's red light cameras have been offline since January, and on Tuesday, July 18, the Oxnard Police Department let it be known that they would like to change that. Oxnard Police Chief Scott Whitney told the City Council that the lights save lives and that known issues regarding timing have been fixed.

Donated materials and skilled labor have helped in the effort, with the Home Depot Foundation donating $18,200 in materials, and further donations arriving from Hansen's Plumbing & Mechanical, Aladdin Air Conditioning & Heating Inc., 101 Flooring, Taft Electric Company, Signature Signs, PODS, Anderson Rubbish Disposal, Amantia Plastering, JW Floors, BMC building supply and Behr Paint.

    The erosion of environmental protections should come as no surprise under the new administration of a president who promised to ax two regulations for every new one, and a Republican-led Congress that has proved to be "pro-business" despite costs to the environment. And with former Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, who has sued the Environmental Protection Agency 13 times, now at the helm of the EPA, it's a little unnerving to contemplate not only how our environment will fare but how we will all get through this with the least amount of suffering.

    Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 161 individuals from 13 different countries over the weekend, including six in Ventura County, during a five-day enforcement operation that also included Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside and Santa Barbara Counties. Officials say that the targets of the raids were immigrants who have been perceived as "public safety threats"; and of the 161, 151 had prior criminal convictions.
