    A Navajo high school student from Shiprock won a contest to bring TV's Judge Judy Sheindlin to speak during her school's graduation on May 21. Alexus Uentillie of Shiprock High submitted an essay to the Facebook contest, "The Ultimate High School Graduation...with America's Favorite Judge!" She was asked to tell Judge Judy in 250 words or less about the people, programs or special spirit that makes her high school stand out from the rest. A portion of Uentillie's essay reads: "I believe having you speak at our school would be extremely memorable.

    Gov. Susana Martinez has ordered flags be flown at half-staff statewide from sunrise to sunset Friday in honor of fallen Navajo Nation police officer Alex Yazzie, who was shot and killed in the line of duty March 19. Funeral services for Officer Yazzie will also be held Friday at the Pinon Hills Community Church in Farmington at 10 a.m. Burial services will then take place at the Memory Garden Cemetery and a reception will follow at the National Guard Armory. According to the Navajo Police Department, Yazzie was very proud to be a Navajo police officer and a U.S. Marine.

    Navajo Nation police are searching for a 24-year-old man they say shot at an officer south of the Little Water Trading Post, south of Shiprock, Thursday evening. The man identified as Justin Fowler was wearing a black jacket, black pants, a baseball cap and possibly a bullet proof vest, according to Navajo police.

    A federal judge sentenced a Shiprock man to ten years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, on sexual assault of a child charges stemming from the sexual assault of a 7-year-old Navajo child on Feb. 26. 25-year-old Gerald A. Tso was arrested that day in February and was indicted March 26. He pleaded guilty to the charges on July 24. Tso will be forced to register as a sex offender upon completion of his prison sentence. He is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation.
