The sergeant was taken to Swedish Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries after the accident about 2:15 a.m. as he was traveling eastbound on Oxford at Natches Court.

The fire near 4300 South Clay St., southeast of South Federal Boulevard and West Oxford Avenue, sent black plumes of smoke into a sunny sky that could be seen for miles at about 6 p.m. No injuries were reported and the families, whose homes were to the west of the fire, were allowed back after fire investigators confirmed only property damage.

The incident began about 8 a.m. when Sheridan police received a report of a suspicious person at a convenience store at 4096 S. Federal Blvd. Police went to the scene, and the suspect, identified as Ismael Rayos, was evasive in answering questions, said Sheridan Police Chief Mark Campbell.
