    When Polly Wharton stood at the Jefferson County Courthouse for the formal uncovering of a bronze plaque at the building's entryway 31 years ago, she said saw the marker simply as a way to honor her Confederate ancestors. Now that she's learned how Linda Ballard and other local African-Americans view the plaque, Wharton - president of Leetown's United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1986 and since that chapter disbanded, a leader with Shepherdstown's UDC - says she wants the plaque taken down.
