    In early October, the Civil War Trust, with the cooperation of the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association, acquired 2.72 acres of land to be incorporated into the protected battlefield area. The Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting land involved in the 1862 Battle of Shepherdstown, has been working with the Civil War Trust and National Park Service for more than four years to acquire and preserve land along River Road in Shepherdstown.

    Award-winning writer and editor Ginny Fite will be signing copies of her latest murder mystery novel, "Cromwell's Folly," at Four Seasons Books in Shepherdstown this Friday at 7 p.m. Fite said the idea for setting a gruesome murder near the Charles Town racetrack came to her one day as she was driving toward the city on U.S. 340 and her mind was suddenly flooded with images of a dismembered body scattered around several dumpsters throughout town. "All of a sudden the story started telling itself to me, and then I couldn't get home fast enough so that I could start typing it," she said.

    The construction of a new building for the Shepherdstown Public Library was a long-time goal of library staff and supporters, and now, they are one step closer to that goal following the Jefferson County Planning Commission's approval of the concept plan for the new library building. The Shepherdstown Public Library is currently located at 100 E. German St. While the 2,000 square-foot building is geographically in the center of the town, a larger library, located closer to residential areas would better serve the community, according to librarian Hali Taylor.
