    One of Whidbey Island's most famous boats made headlines Sunday when it ran aground in the San Juan islands with a troop of Coupeville Boys Scouts aboard. The Cutty Sark, a 58-foot, wooden-hulled ketch often seen - and admired - in Penn Cove, ran aground on "Bird Rock" north of Shaw Island, according to John Stone, Coupeville resident and captain of the boat.

    Coast Guard crews, including one from Bellingham, plucked several children from a large sailboat that ran aground north of Shaw Island in the San Juans west of Bellingham on Sunday, June 12. According to a statement from the Coast Guard office in Astoria, Ore., the 58-foot Cutty Sark, a wooden-hulled ketch based on Whidbey Island, ran aground on Bird Rock and began listing. A 29-foot boat from Bellingham was dispatched after a distress call and its crew was joined by the cutter Adelie, an 87-foot vessel based in Port Angeles.
