    In the mid 1980s, Saul Weisberg, now the executive director of the North Cascades Institute, was a climbing ranger in North Cascades National Park and finishing up a graduate degree in biology. Free picnic: NCI will host a picnic for all ages at its learning center on Diablo Lake from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 17. In addition to lunch featuring local foods, there will be naturalist-led activities on Diablo Lake and local trails.

    Authorities say a man in jail on child molestation charges tried to arrange for another inmate to kill his alleged victim. Mount Vernon police said in a news release Wednesday a 50-year-old man from Sedro-Woolley was charged Tuesday with criminally attempting to commit murder.

    The hoof disease that's been crippling elk in southwestern Washington for years apparently has taken hold farther north, state Fish and Wildlife officials say. Preliminary tests indicate bacteria found in an abnormal hoof taken from an elk killed in a vehicle collision in Skagit County east of Sedro-Woolley may be the same strain found in the Mount St. Helens and Willapa Hills elk herds farther south.
