The legislative session in Albany has begun to take on a tired refrain - one that pits "affordable housing advocates" against "powerful real-estate interests." This year the battle lines have formed around 421-a, a tax abatement for new construction whose elimination has become a rallying cry for some, even though most people don't understand the program's details or that it is essential to the development of housing. Comment?
In one of the biggest political scandals in the nation's history, a federal grand jury indicted today six of President Nixon's top aides and the lawyer for his reelection committee on charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to cover up the 1972 break-in and bugging of Democratic National headquarters at the Watergate Building. Nixon's name was mentioned only in passing in the 50-page, 13-count indictment, but although he was not referred to specifically in any of the 45 "overt acts" alleged in the conspiracy, two of those acts occurred at White House meetings at which Nixon apparently was present. Comment?
