    California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Wednesday he will continue to seek the death penalty against Scott Dekraai, who pleaded guilty to killing eight people and wounding another at a Seal Beach salon in 2011 . Becerra's office inherited Dekraai's penalty trial in 2015 after a judge fired the Orange County District Attorney's Office from the case - the deadliest mass murder in Orange County history - for fear the defendant's rights were being violated.

    Tom Amberry, the Long Beach podiatrist who took up free-throw shooting as a hobby in retirement and ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records after making 2,750 consecutive shots in a Seal Beach gym, died March 18 in Long Beach. He was 94. Amberry set the record at the Rossmoor Athletic Club in Seal Beach, where he started frequenting after ending a 40-year career as a podiatrist in 1991.
