    A proposal to increase the legal age of purchasing tobacco products from 18 to 21 in St. Lawrence County drew a mix of support and opposition among county lawmakers Monday night. County Public Health Director James O. Rich, two representatives from the Seaway Valley Prevention Council and Massena Village Patrolman Christopher Flynn urged lawmakers to adopt the legislation, known as T-21.

    Anti-tobacco advocates plan to speak to St. Lawrence County legislators Monday night about raising the legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21, a measure that may pit health officials against tobacco retailers. The legislation, known as T-21, has already been enacted in other parts of the country and other counties in New York, but not in the north country.
