UC Santa Barbara is leading the West Coast division of this public-private partnership, in collaboration with the State University of New York - the lead university in this institute.

    The "Hills Bandit" was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison Tuesday for a string of bank robberies from Laguna Niguel to Santa Barbara. Stephen Richard Bartlett, 54, previously pled guilty to five counts of bank robbery, each one carrying a possible sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.

    The man who was struck and killed by an Amtrak train near the Santa Barbara Zoo on Monday has been identified as 59-year-old Santa Barbara resident Thomas Henry Grimm. According to an eye witness, Grimm was walking next to the train tracks when he was hit.
