J.T. moved to central Maine in the early 1970s, drawn in part by the homesteading movement, and built a log cabin on his twenty-two acres of wooded paradise where he raised his family with his beautiful wife.

    Earlier this month, lawmakers overrode a veto from Gov. Paul LePage to raise the legal age for buying tobacco products in Maine to 21. It had previously been 18. While advocates for increasing the age focused on data about health and cost savings that could come from the law change, LePage said he vetoed the legislation because 18-year-olds can serve in the military and, perhaps, be killed in a war. Even after lawmakers from both parties overrode his veto, he continued to vent his anger to the Legislature.

    A bill that would raise the minimum legal age to buy tobacco products to 21 received a strong endorsement Thursday morning in the Maine Senate. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Paul Davis, R-Sangerville, was initially supported 31-4 and then amended so that anyone who is at least 18 years old as of July 1, 2018, can buy tobacco products, with the practical effect being that the law wouldn't be fully in effect until those people turn 21 in 2021.
