Sanford police say 13-year-old Marcees Kilpatrick was about to cross the train tracks around 5:45 p.m. Friday when he was clipped by the side of the SunRail train.

    In an effort to prevent similar efforts elsewhere, greyhound owners and breeders are suing Seminole County over an ordinance requiring trainers to report racing dog injuries. The legal battle comes after the Legislature did not adopt statewide regulations to require the injury reports, an effort pushed by Massachusetts-based Grey2K USA Worldwide and other animal-rights advocates.

    Florida's school superintendents are "gravely concerned" about the Legislature's school spending plans, noting Thursday their proposed budget, if approved Monday, would mean some of the state's 67 school districts will have less money per student in the coming year and all would deal with an allocation "not sufficient to to meet the basic funding needs of Florida's 2.8 million public school students." The proposal for spending an average of $7,221 per student represents a 1.2 percent increase from the current year.
