    Recently, I celebrated 20 years with MarketWatch-a very long ride to say the least-in a fast paced, volatile commodities market that has seen gold prices jump by more than $1,000 an ounce and oil roughly quadruple in price since my first day at work. The company was known as CBS MarketWatch at the time, and part of Data Broadcasting Corp. It was based in San Mateo, Calif.-and I was hired as a newswire operator to help distribute financial news and commodity reports to customers for a third-party client.

    France's Thales SA on Friday said it is acquiring a U.S. big-data analysis firm amid a wider push by U.S. and European aerospace and defense companies to capitalize on the vast amount of information their sophisticated systems collect. Thales said it will pay as much as $215 million for San Mateo, Calif.-based Guavus, a 250-person business with more than $30 million in expected 2017 sales.
