    The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office has filed a civil lawsuit seeking nearly half a million dollars from a business owner accused of violating state environmental laws, an allegation the San Gregorio man adamantly denies. The district attorney filed the case Tuesday against Skylonda Equipment Inc., a San Gregorio-based company in the business of wildland fire prevention and land clearing, and its owner Richard Rogers.

    A rundown home on a coastal farm that had been vacant for years is now occupied by farmworkers paying substantially below-market-rate rents because of a partnership between San Mateo County and nonprofit Peninsula Open Space Trust. Known as the Red House at Cloverdale Coastal Ranches in Pescadero, the project is one of four in the works and the first of many more that the two partners are pursuing to preserve agricultural land and support the workers who steward it.

    A man died when his vehicle went off the road and crashed into a tree in unincorporated San Mateo County on Sunday morning, California Highway Patrol officials said. Maxwell Vincent, 20, of the unincorporated San Mateo County community of San Gregorio, was found dead by a bicyclist who called the CHP at 8:24 a.m. to report the crash off of state Highway 1 just north of Stage Road, CHP spokesman Officer Art Montiel said.

In an effort to preserve picturesque cattle grazing grounds, commemorate times past and enhance recreational opportunities, a new section of the bucolic La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve is now open to the public for the first time. Starting Friday, Dec. 1, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is welcoming visitors to a 2,100-acre lower section of the nearly 6,100-acre preserve along the hillside overlooking the coast.
