    Thanks to lower oil prices and abundant supply, the average price of a gallon gas decreased seven cents over the past three weeks to a nationwide average of $2.29. The Associated Press reports that it is 54 cents below the average price of one year ago at this time.

    Two local residents suffered major injuries in a Wednesday night wreck after being rear-ended in a construction zone by an alleged DUI truck driver. Just after 10 p.m., the California Highway Patrol San Andreas Unit reports that the driver, identified as 37-year-old Steven Leitner of Valley Springs, was headed west on Highway 26 in a 2016 Ford utility truck, approaching Baldwin Street at about 55 miles-per-hour.

    As previously reported , AAA had predicted that it would be the busiest Fourth of July travel weekend in California since 2002, with projected travel to roll up by 1.2 percent thanks to the improving economy, lower gas prices, and Monday being the 4th. In Tuolumne County, there were seven traffic collisions with minor injuries and property damage.

    Following the Monday Independence Day holiday Caltrans crews will be back on the job bright and early along many mainstay Mother Lode highways. On Highway 120, the $20.8 million Roberts Bridge refurbishment project at Don Pedro begins in earnest this week as crews lay K-rail, bringing 15-minute delays while doing so this Wednesday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Over the coming months plans are to build a new bridge deck and railings; strengthen girders and make other improvements to improve the seismic strength and reduce the need for frequent minor repairs; and install a portable traffic signal to improve bridge traffic flow.

    The CHP has identified the two individuals from San Andreas who suffered major injuries in a solo vehicle crash in Calaveras County. The CHP reports 74-year-old Veronica Pargett was driving a 2008 Pontiac eastbound on Highway 4 near Bear Valley around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, when for unknown reasons she allowed the vehicle to drift off the roadway.
