    This coming Friday marks 100 years since the USS Milwaukee ran aground while trying to save a submarine that also ran aground on Samoa Beach in what has been called the biggest disaster in Humboldt Bay maritime history. This wasn't just the biggest disaster for Humboldt Bay, but at the time it was the worst peacetime disaster for the U.S. Navy, local historian and author of “Shipwrecked at Samoa, California: The Loss of the Navy Cruiser USS Milwaukee” Raymond Hillman said.
