    Salinas >> Three different entities have the authority to enact a moratorium on new wells in parts of the northern Salinas Valley to fight advancing seawater intrusion, according to a report to the Board of Supervisors. The report to be considered by the supervisors during a special 1:30 p.m. joint meeting with the Monterey County Water Resources Agency board on Tuesday indicates the county, the water agency and the Salinas Valley Groundwater Sustainability Agency each has the power to adopt an ordinance prohibiting new wells in the Salinas Valley basin's 400-foot aquifer and Deep Aquifer under different legal authorities.

Salinas City Elementary, Salinas Union High, Greenfield Union Elementary, King City Elementary, and South Monterey County Joint Union High are among the 228 districts statewide that were identified for “differentiated assistance.” The districts will receive help because they have at least one student sub-group not doing well in two or more areas of priority for the state, according the new system unveiled Thursday.
