    A plan was devised Monday to express joint opposition to Southside-Ashpole Elementary School being included in the state's Innovative School District and information about the construction of a new school district central office complex was exchanged during a meeting of county commissioners and school board. Both governing bodies voted unanimously to issue a resolution opposing the school in Rowland being taken over by the state and run by either a charter management organization or an education management organization hired by the state Department of Public Instruction for five years.

    Multiple sources confirmed Friday afternoon that the school in Rowland will be one of two schools that, starting in the 2018-19 academic year, will cease to be controlled by local school districts.     Rowland Police Chief John Reaves briefed the town commissioners during their meeting on Tuesday on a shooting that occurred Monday night at the Rowland Motel. Officers responded Monday night to the sound of gunfire at the motel located at 502 S. Bond St. Reaves said that a small to midsize gray vehicle stopped at the hotel and someone inside began shooting repeatedly at a room at the motel.

Roberto Flores-Gueuara, of Alexandria, Va., and Nicoles Quintanilla Alba, of Layton, Va., reported Monday that someone robbed them at gunpoint at Walmart Neighborhood Store on West Fifth Street in Lumberton.
