Records from Baker Hughes, a Houston-based industrial service company and subsidiary of General Electric, reported 87 rigs in New Mexico as of Feb. 23, up from last year's total at the same time of 48. New Mexico had the third highest rig count in the country, behind Texas at 482 rigs, and Oklahoma at 121.
