    Steven Wayne Crowley, 26, allegedly stole a credit card, or credit information, which he then used to make 19 purchases, totaling $13,442.55, from the Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts locations on Broad Avenue in Rockingham, according to warrants for his arrest. Crowley was arrested Nov. 15 and is charged with 19 felony counts of identity theft and obtaining property under false pretenses, as well as a misdemeanor charge of second-degree trespassing and a traffic infraction for driving while his license was revoked, according to court records.

    A man is accused of setting fire on his grandfather's Airport Road property, causing about $20,000 in damage, according to investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Christopher Ray Wall, 20, is alleged to have intentionally started a fire that burned his grandfather's storage shed and spread to his garage.

    Mayor Steve Morris issued a proclamation to designate November 2017 as "Hospice and Palliative Care Month" in honor of hospice caregivers, volunteers and staff. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization on Oct. 31 issued a national proclamation of the same and called on the public to follow suit in honor of the 50th anniversary of what is widely believed to be the first hospice organization, St. Christopher's Hospice in London, according to the NHPCO website.

    Richmond County has entered the planning and permitting process for a new shell building to be used by a business or industry looking for office space, Economic Developer Martie Butler said at the monthly county commissioners meeting on Tuesday. Shell buildings are empty offices that, once purchased by a company, can be easily modified to fit their needs and are considered a major incentive to invest in the area, according to Butler.

    The Richmond County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved a bid to clear a water line to make room for the widening of the strip of U.S. 1 that goes past Rockingham Speedway and Rockingham Dragway starting at the intersection with Marston Road. The bid was awarded to Anson Contractors who priced the project at $967,095.85, but that tab will not be picked up by Richmond County taxpayers thanks to an agreement with the N.C. Department of Transportation.

    Fire Chief Harold Isler said he was told that the man was pouring gasoline into a generator when it exploded, causing major burns to his arms and face and eventually setting fire to the second floor of the building at 647 McNair Road. The call for the fire went out at 8:06 p.m. and the upper floor was fully engulfed and flames had broken through the tar-shingled roof when crews arrived - however, the victim was not there.
