    The Parks and Recreation Trust Fund denied Richmond County's application for a grant to fund improvements to East Rockingham Park, County Manager Bryan Land informed county commissioners last week. The county submitted the grant application in April, asking the PARTF for $500,000 to help offset a project estimated to cost $1.9 million that would provide "major" renovations to the park - including upgrades to the swimming pool and pool house, as well as adding a batting cage, a sand volleyball court and two horseshoe pits.

    Firefighters will burn down the abandoned Harrington Restaurant at 164 Brookstone Lane behind the Holiday Inn Express on Highway 74 in a training exercise from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The building was donated to the Rockingham Fire Department as a way to help the owner save on demolition costs and provide firefighters with a training ground, according to Fire Chief Harold Isler. He added that the owner is required to remove any asbestos in the building prior to donating it.

    A man who was first convicted on a misdemeanor drug charge at the age of 16 is now accused of having cocaine. Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office arrested 26-year-old Garrison Karl Cook, of Northam Road, Rockingham, on Nov. 20 for allegedly possessing cocaine and two unspecified types of prescription pills, according to a press release.
