    A planned paving project on the 60 Freeway that will close the entire freeway for several weekends between Jurupa Valley and Riverside is set to begin in late 2018 or early 2019, a Caltrans spokeswoman said Monday, Aug. 7. Last week, officials said the project would begin in January 2018, but spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said the agency made a mistake. The $134 million project will repair pavement on a 27-mile stretch in both directions on the 60 from Euclid Avenue in Ontario to the 60/91/215 interchange in Riverside.

    A Riverside elementary school teacher's aide accused of molesting students must stand trial on eight felony charges, a judge ruled Monday, Aug. 7. Fernando Figueroa, 24, is charged with seven counts of lewd acts on a child under 14 years old and one count of oral copulation of a child under 10, with a sentence-enhancing allegation of targeting multiple children. According to Riverside police, detectives were alerted to the possible molestation of a student in the technology lab at Liberty Elementary School in February and initiated an investigation.

    Riverside's $2-per-ride fare for special transit that serves seniors and disabled residents hasn't increased since 2006, but city officials say they need to start charging $3 a ride to maintain service. The Riverside City Council will consider options including increasing fares and subsidizing the service from the city general fund at a 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 8, in the council chambers at Riverside City Hall, 3900 Main St. Residents use the service to schedule rides for shopping, doctor visits and other trips.
