Windstream has expanded its metro fiber network in Philadelphia, deepening its reach into local data centers and business building locations. In addition to providing local business connectivity via fiber-based Ethernet or fixed wireless, businesses will have another junction point to get access to the telco's nationwide fiber network. Windstream is tightening up its interconnection points, weeding out unnecessary third-party circuits with other carriers to streamline costs and focus on expanding its on-net footprint, a senior executive said. "The DS-3 displacement opportunity for us is really going into markets where we have redundant networks from legacy acquisitions and re-architecting how we're serving customers within those locations and driving out excess capacity of DS-3s and above," said Bob Gunderman, CFO of Windstream, in a presentation at the Barclays 2016 High Yield Bond Conference. Windstream has added Nashville to the growing list of last mile network builds, announcing an expansion of its metro fiber network in the Nashville area to address local businesses on its own infrastructure. When this expansion is complete, the provider will serve the Nashville area's business community with a mix of fiber and fixed wireless network connectivity that it says connects a larger set of local data centers and commercial business buildings to its fiber network. Windstream, like other service providers sees how IP technology can lower its cost structure, but the telco is also seeing opportunities to cut costs by realigning its interconnection agreements with other carriers.
