  2. Search for cause of North Texas earthquakes continuesRead the original story

    Nov 8, 2015 | Tyler Morning Telegraph

About two years ago, a series of small earthquakes occurred a few miles north of Fort Worth, and there were immediate demands to ban hydraulic fracturing, prohibit drilling of new oil and gas wells, stop all disposal well operations and cease production. About 800 angry citizens in the towns of Azle and Reno met in the Azle High School auditorium with officials of the Texas Railroad Commission , which is the primary regulator of oil and gas, to express their theories that the oil and gas industry was the cause of the seismic activity.

The Texas Railroad Commission appears poised to clear a second oilfield company of responsibility for a series of earthquakes that rattled two North Texas towns - despite research suggesting otherwise. Railroad Commissioner Ryan Sitton speaks with seismologists from SMU, UT-Austin and the U.S. Geological Survey as they spoke before the Railroad Commission about their study of quakes in Azle and Reno at a panel in Austin in May. Five months ago geologists from Southern Methodist University identified two wells used to store wastewater from natural gas drilling as the likely cause of a series of earthquakes around the North Texas town of Azle in late 2013. One would think maybe, just maybe, XTO Energy, faced with a peer-reviewed study by SMU researchers and a mountain of evidence that the company is causing earthquakes, would consider shutting down its fracking and disposal wells in Azle and Reno. The SMU and federal research demonstrates pretty clearly that the swarm of earthquakes that struck Azle and nearby town Reno in 2013 were caused by fracking-related activities, namely wastewater disposal.
