    A Sparks man was sentenced Tuesday to more than 17 years in federal prison for possession of child pornography, according the the Department of Justice. 48-year-old Jeffrey Scott Varnum pleaded guilty in April to one count of receipt of child pornography and was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Howard D. McKibben.

    A Reno man was sentenced to more than two years in prison and ordered to pay restitution for the theft of government property, according to a statement from the Department of Justice on Wednesday. 36-year-old Tony Herrin -- resident of Reno -- was sentenced by United States District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller to two years and nine months in prison and restitution of $411,333 for theft of government property, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.
