The Vinalhaven girls basketball team secured its first regional championship in 34 years last season en route to the school's initial state championship and coveted gold ball.

The Viking girls - the defending state Class D champions - remained unbeaten with a pair of wins over Rangeley, as they netted a 51-32 win Jan. 6 and a 53-39 win Jan. 5. The squads are among the top teams in Class D South and it could have been potential regional championship preview.

Vinalhaven School and North Haven Community School also have many talented good sports as well, not just in terms of wins and losses, but by playing the right way inside the lines on the soccer field.
