Sarah Brown was named Explorer of the Year, and Citizen Volunteer Patrol member Carlos Padilla was named the Volunteer of the Year during the ceremony at the Redlands Police Annex. Sgt. Dominick Povero received the Lifesaving Award for his actions on May 3, performing the Heimlich maneuver to save a choking victim at a downtown restaurant.

Victorville attorneys Stanley Hodge, Jim Terrell and Sharon Brunner filed the lawsuits on Dec. 10. One lawsuit names inmate David Smith , charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 execution-style slayings of a teenage couple in an abandoned Air Force bunker near Barstow, as the sole plaintiff.
