    The ex-con accused of fatally shooting an NYPD officer in 2015 underwent brain surgery prior to the killing that affected his mental state, his lawyer said Friday during opening statements in the man's murder trial. Demetrius Blackwell, 37, who is charged with gunning down Officer Brian Moore, 25, in Queens Village on Saturday, May 2, 2015, suffers from epilepsy and had to undergo brain surgery two years prior to the shooting, his attorney David Bart said.

    Four family members, ages 2 to 20, killed in a massive house fire last month were remembered Saturday at their funeral as the city still investigates what sparked the blaze. Hundreds of mourners - many wearing T-shirts with collages of the victims - filled New Greater Bethel Ministries on Jamaica Avenue in Queens Village for the hours-long homecoming service for Chayce Lipford, 2, Rashawn Matthews, 10, Jada Foxworth, 16, and Destiny Dones, 20, who died in the fire that consumed the wood-frame home at 112-15 208th St. on April 23. Family friend Melody Edwards, 17, a family friend who was visiting at the time of the fire and perished inside, was buried in a separate funeral last week, officials said.

The fire broke out at 112-16 208th St. and was reported just after 2:30 p.m. by a man driving by, according to the fire department.

    A Brooklyn management company was fined $33,000 by the City Commission on Human Rights after rejecting a woman's housing voucher and leaving her homeless for two months, according to court documents. The commission last week fined the landlord, American Construction Associates, $20,000 for discriminating against the woman, Miladys Agosto, on the basis of her use of a voucher and also ordered the company to pay Agosto an additional $13,000 for emotional distress, according to a spokesman for the agency.
