    Firefighters responded to the fires near the Puunene Post Office at 10 Hansen Road at about 2:25 p.m. Thursday following reports of a loud explosion in the area. Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto of the Maui Fire Department said flames were scorching brush about 150 yards from the post office.

Ahu'ena Heiau Inc. and a group of Maui volunteers spent Saturday stripping 40,000 sugar cane leaves to ship to Kona, where they will be used to help restore an ancient hale, or house, that served as Kamehameha the Great's final residence, The Maui News reported .

    Hawaii-born surfing pioneer Conrad Canha, above, catches a wave off Ala Moana in the summer of 1966. Canha, pictured at left in 2004, died July 21. Hawaii-born international surfing champion Conrad Canha, who pioneered performance wave-riding known as "hot-dogging," has died at age 85. Before he was a teenager, Canha's family, who lived in Puunene, Maui, moved to Honolulu to get away from life on a sugar plantation.
