    An Alaska company says changing ice conditions in the North Slope area have allowed it to make a bulk fuel delivery to Prudhoe Bay by barge for the first time. KTUU-TV reported Thursday that Colville Inc. says that the single trip carried 2 million gallons of fuel.

    The U.S. Navy has kicked off submarine testing and training under sea ice off Alaska's north coast that takes place every other year and includes the surfacing of a submarine that punches through sea ice. The exercises, which also include the collection of scientific data, are dubbed Ice Exercise 2018, or ICEX18, and will include maneuvers by three submarines under Arctic ice, including a British sub, over five weeks.

The video from the three-day event in remote Point Hope, at the edge of the Arctic Ocean, showed whaling captains sharing the flippers with residents, traditional drumming and dancing, and the ever-popular blanket toss, where villagers use seal skins to heave each other into the air.

    William Walsh, a spokesman for Ravn Alaska, says the airline canceled flights Wednesday to and from Kotzebue and Deadhorse, the supply hub for the Prudhoe Bay oil fields. Dave Schneider with the Alaska Volcano Observatory says the cloud originated from the Sheveluch Volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, which erupted Tuesday, sending an ash cloud about 26,000 feet into the atmosphere.
