    More than 140 cities and towns in Massachusetts have passed ordinances lifting the minimum purchase age for tobacco products from 18 to 21, and a bill that would make the higher age a statewide policy passed the state Senate 32-2 last year. Last week, a group of more than 100 cancer patients, survivors, families and volunteers with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network visited Beacon Hill to ask lawmakers to support a tobacco control bill that includes the three-year age boost.

    Joseph Valdes didn't have much time to worry about the first open division bout of his amateur boxing career taking place in the New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. First off, Valdes, 19, a recent 123-pound New England novice champ from Amherst, N.H., didn't even know he would even be fighting in Wednesday's New England Open semifinals until Tuesday at 8 p.m. The scheduled boxer at 123 for Central New England pulled out of the tourney.

    A Lowell man driving a box truck was involved in a fatal turnpike crash Friday afternoon when he struck the rear of a car and then landed on top of it, state police said in a press release. Two people, including a 5-year-old boy, died after John Kamau, 56, of Lowell, struck the rear of their car on the Maine Turnpike in Wells, state police said.
