    One person died when a car crashed into the Friant-Kern Canal near Porterville, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday. The car, driven by Manuel Aguirre, was traveling westbound on Avenue 24 west of Road 184 around 9:41 a.m. Tuesday when it crossed into the eastbound lane, hit a bridge abutment and crashed into the canal, where it became submerged.
