    Samuel White, a member of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, joined the Port Gamble S'Klallam Police Department as chief of police on Oct. 22. He's spent 12 years in law enforcement, including serving as police chief for the Makah Nation. He was director of the Makah Nation's Public Safety Department and spent almost four years there.

    The Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe's Child Welfare Program has been named an Honoring Nations award winner through The Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development. In 2012, the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, population 1,000, became the first indigenous nation in the United States to earn Title IV-E status from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - that is, the right to manage its own foster case, adoption, and guardianship programs.
