    A few weeks ago I was out at the Meigs SWCD Conservation Area and noticed that our bluebird boxes, particularly the poles, were a little worse for wear. The boxes were installed a few years earlier by an enterprising Boy Scout troop, and over the years I have routinely inspected them during the winter; which involves cleaning out the old nesting material, replacing any damaged boards and making them ready for the upcoming year.

In both counties the recycling program is administered by the Gallia-Jackson-Meigs-Vinton Solid Waste District which has had a contract with Rumpke Waste & Recycling to handle the recycling containers since Jan. 1, 2014 .

    Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood reports charges are being filed against Derek Nichols, age 27, of Pomeroy, Ohio for the Jan. 27 armed robbery of the TNT Gas Station in Syracuse, Ohio. Deputies first received the report of a masked suspect entering the TNT Gas Station at approximately 9:20 p.m. with a knife demanding money.

    According to a news release, the sheriff' office has taken a report of a missing-runaway juvenile who was last seen in Point Pleasant, West Virginia on Jan. 29. Deputies have taken a report of a runaway juvenile, Franklin Dickens, age 16, from Rose Hill Road, Pomeroy. Dickens was last seen on Sunday, Jan. 29 by his uncle in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

    Rich Gilkey, who previously served as the chief of police in the Town of New Haven for six years, will now be at the helm of Mason's department. Though the new chief was hired as a full-time employee, he will also remain in his job as a maintenance mechanic/welder at the ICL-IP America, Inc. plant in Gallipolis Ferry.

    According to a news release from the Gallipolis Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, John E. Blake, 84, of Middleport died as a result of the crash which occurred near the intersection of Route 7 and 33. Blake was reportedly driving westbound in the eastbound lane of Route 7 in the area of the Meigs Motel and struck a vehicle driving eastbound head on. The eastbound vehicle was driven by Adam C. Doczi, 33, of Pomeroy who was transported by Meigs County EMS to St. Mary's Hospital with non-incapacitating injuries. 8 comments
