    South Baton Rouge shows political clout in battle against barge cleaning facility as neighbors to north also struggle with concerns about pollution A proposed barge-cleaning facility along the Mississippi River near a neighborhood south of LSU has set off a firestorm of protest from an array of heavy-hitters. The Planning Commission will consider whether to rezone the area where the barge cleaning will be located on Aug. 17. The issue will go back to the Metro Council Aug. 19. DEQ's public hearing on the proposed barge cleaning facility is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 18 in the Oliver Pollock Room in the Galvez Building, 602 N 5th Street.

    State police say a 7-year-old Pollock girl died when the car she was a passenger in crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler. Master Trooper Scott Moreau said in a news release Adrein Silk, who was wearing her seat belt while sitting in the front passenger seat, died at the scene of Thursday's wreck on U.S. Highway 165 north of Pollock.

    With concerns now being voiced by the LSU President and the Mayor-President of Baton Rouge, the state Department of Environmental Quality has decided to postpone a public hearing and extend public comment on a proposed barge cleaning facility along River Road. The public hearing will now be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 in the Oliver Pollock Room in the Galvez Building at 602 N 5th St. The public comment has been extended to Aug. 31. Requests to postpone the public hearing set for next week and give additional comment time began Tuesday during a public meeting set up by the Louisiana Environmental Action Network and LSU Superfund Research Center Community Engagement Core.
