Firefighters from the Cumberland, Pleasant City and Belle Valley volunteer fire departments responded to the scene and extinguished the fire but not before the structure sustained extensive damage.

    The Fishel awards were announced May 27 by the fund's trustees, Guernsey County Prosecutor Daniel G. Padden Fund trustees Guernsey County Probate/Juvenile Judge David B. Bennett and US Bank Regional President Jeff East announced the awards May 24. The trust was established in 1974 by Dr. Waite Phillip Fishel, former professor of chemistry at Vanderbilt University in memory of his only son, Myron, who was killed in World War II. After attending school in Pleasant City, Dr. Fishel taught six years in Guernsey County, teaching three years in one-room schools and serving three years as school superintendent at Buffalo.

    Firefighters from seven area departments responded to the home at 7775 Crane Run Road after the occupant reported his home was on fire at 2:53 p.m. Cumberland, Byesville, Cassell Station, Lore City, Pleasant City, Senecaville and Belle Valley volunteer firefighters were dispatched to the scene along with medical personnel from the Cumberland department and United Ambulance Service. At least one individual was transported to the hospital approximately two hours after the fire was reported.
