    After its best month in about a year and a half in March, Plainridge Park Casino raked in even more money in April, counting about $14.3 million in what was the slots parlor's third best month on record, the Gaming Commission announced Monday. Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, the first and so far only gambling facility to open under a six-year-old expanded gaming law, generated $14,305,671.75 in gross gaming revenue in April from $174,811,169.76 in wagers.

    A federal appeals court on Monday overturned a lower court ruling that had denied the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head the right to build a casino gaming facility on Martha's Vineyard, opening the door to another possible casino in Massachusetts. A U.S. District Court judge in 2015 ruled that the tribe failed to exercise sufficient "governmental power" over its tribal land and therefore could not operate any gaming facility there.

    Through the first five months of the fiscal year, the Massachusetts Lottery has sold $11.5 million less of its scratch tickets and draw games than the same period last fiscal year, Executive Director Michael Sweeney said Tuesday, and that year-to-date deficit is expect to grow. Through November, the Lottery has taken in $2.195 billion in sales -- $11.5 million or 0.5 percent less than the $2.2065 billion in sales in the first five months of the previous fiscal year.

    On a per-machine basis, the slots parlor at Plainridge Park in Plainville has the highest revenue of any similar gaming facility in the country, the parlor's general manager told the Gaming Commission on Tuesday. Plainridge Park General Manager Lance George said the slots parlor averaged a "win per unit" -- the average net revenue generated daily by the facility's 1,250 machines -- of $346 during the third quarter of 2016.

    Former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi will leave a North Carolina prison roughly two years before his projected release date on account of his ailing health, federal Judge Mark Wolf ruled Thursday. Wolf allowed a government motion to reduce DiMasi's eight-year sentence to time served, ordering the Bureau of Prisons to release DiMasi to his wife Deborah DiMasi's custody on Tuesday morning, two days before Thanksgiving.
