    At a public hearing on Tuesday, September 25, Charlotte County Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance to adopt a small-scale plan amendment to the development of the Fishery property, located at 13000 Fishery Rd. The "Village & Marina at Boca Grande" project, spearheaded by real estate developer Jay Feinberg, went before commissioners on Tuesday as a proposed petition to request a change in zoning from resource conservation to commercial, and a companion rezoning plan for property. The focal point of the proposed marina development would be a 150-room boutique hotel, designated to cater to destination weddings and meetings.

    Frances Dale Melvold of Maquoketa, Iowa, who spent winters with her husband and family members at Boca Grande for more than 40 years, died November 27, 2017 at Clover Ridge Place Assisted Living in Maquoketa. She was 93. After visits to the island in the early 1970s, she and her husband, Robert, were among the first to purchase a condominium at the Boca Grande Beach Club following its development in 1973.

    The health of Lemon Bay is important to us all and each month volunteers monitor the water quality at sites from Alligator Creek in Venice to Bull Bay in Placida to see that it stays that way. On the 1st Monday of each month, trained volunteers travel to one of 16 "fixed" sites to test the water for various parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, etc.

Cookie Potter-Feinberg and her husband, Jay Feinberg, closed on the deal just days ago under the corporation name Placida Point, LLC, after purchasing the 18-acre property from Caribbean Bay Mortgage Lender, LLC. "Cookie felt the property was in the wrong hands, and she was afraid that a bad plan would eventually go through," said Jay Feinberg.

    The Charlotte Planning and Zoning Board hearing on the Fishery proposal was held Monday February 12. The Board voted 3-1 to NOT recommend approval of the change in land use of the Resource Conservation parcel to Commercial and voted 4-0 to NOT recommend approval of the rezone to Planned Development for the property as a whole. The next step was supposed to be a hearing before the Board of County Commissioners on February 27, but we learned today that the applicant has asked to continue that hearing, with no new date set.
