    A Pittsfield woman who allegedly struck  a man over the head with a stick in Hyannis after he insulted her and her girlfriend over their same-sex relationship pleaded not guilty to an assault charge in Barnstable District Court on Thursday. The woman's girlfriend also pleaded not guilty to an assault charge that she allegedly hit the man with a car as they fled the scene.  Nina Cortez, 28, of Pittsfield, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon , and Danielle Devine, 22, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon . 2 comments

Murphy, of Lenox, Mass., and Naples, Fla., and former president of a Pittsfield, Mass., insurance firm whose volunteer work benefited a wide range of community service organizations, died on Jan. 21, 2015, at the Pittsfield home of his son, with whom he had been staying. He was 86 and was suffering from complications of a respiratory condition, said his son, David W. Murphy Jr. David William Murphy was born in Worcester on Feb. 20, 1928, to Owen J. and E. Marie Kelley Murphy.
