    The Pinehurst Village Council on Tuesday declared its "full support" for a proposed quarter-cent local sales tax increase that will be on the ballot for the Nov. 6 election. With Mayor Nancy Fiorillo and Mayor Pro Tem John Cashion absent because of health issues, the three members present voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that urges all of its residents to support the measure.

    Moore County does not have the authority to block Pinebluff from expanding its zoning jurisdiction beyond its town limits, the N.C Court of Appeals said in a unanimous ruling Tuesday. The case centered on an what the appeals termed an "irreconcilable conflict" between a local bill enacted in 1999 for Pinebluff and previous state law regarding a municipality's ability to extend what it called an extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction .

    After hearing unified support from education, business and community leaders, as well as impassioned pleas from several parents, the county commissioners took the final step Tuesday night to put two bond referendums totaling $123 million on the ballot in May. The commissioners were required to hold a public hearing before granting final approval to two separate bond orders -- $103 million for the public schools to finance three elementary schools in Aberdeen, Southern Pines and Pinehurst, and $20 million for Sandhills Community College for a nursing education facility -- and to put the questions on the ballot for the May 8 primary elections.
