    Participants of the 2015 Polar Plunge jumped into the frozen waters behind Brighton High School Saturday afternoon to raise funds for a worthy cause. At the time of the count, Plungers had raised over $27,000 and with funds continuing to roll in, it is expected the community will exceed the $30,000 mark.

    January marks the observance of School Board Recognition Month and officials say it's an opportune time to show appreciation to the forty school board members who serve LESA as well as the Brighton, Fowlerville, Hartland, Howell and Pinckney districts. A press release says school board members dedicate countless hours and provide leadership guidance to local districts in an effort to advance education for the nearly 28,000 children in Livingston County.

    55-year-old Michelle Freeman of Pinckney and Elaine Lovett of Wayne County are accused of conspiring to engage in Medicare fraud and submitting fraudulent claims. The alleged offenses occurred while the pair owned and controlled Oak Park-based ABIX LLC. The complaint alleges they obtained the Medicare numbers of licensed medical service providers in and around Detroit, and then used the information to bill Medicare for chiropractic and psychotherapy services that were not provided.

    The Michigan Department of Transportation completed a number of smaller projects and rehabilitation work in 2014 according to spokeswoman Kari Arend. She says the big project planned in 2015 and 2016 in the area of I-96 and US-23 aims to improve bridges, capacity and safety.

    The ET Rover is a proposed project to construct a new natural gas pipeline from Ohio to Canada by way of Michigan. It will cross Livingston County along a north-south line that passes to the west of Pinckney and between the City of Howell and Fowlerville.

    Community members gathered at the Pinckney Historical Cemetery to lay over 50 wreaths on the headstones of veterans buried throughout the cemetery. This ceremony is part of the national movement, National Wreaths Across America, which began on the East coast in Arlington.

    The Pinckney Historical Cemetery is the only official Livingston County cemetery participating with the national non-profit Wreaths Across America program. Pinckney Village Clerk Amy Salowitz says they're hosting a remembrance ceremony this Saturday at noon honoring local veterans and all those who have served the nation.

    The 3rd annual Dodging Drugs Charity Dodgeball Tournament will be held in the gym at Pathfinder School in Pinckney on December 2nd at 6pm. The event is held every year by the Pinckney Coalition to raise money which will be used to help fight drug abuse in Livingston County and help local families in need.

    The Livingston County Board of Canvassers certified the results of the November 4th midterm election this afternoon. On the Howell Board of Education, Howell Township resident Brent Earl was the winner among write-in candidates with a total of 1,993 votes.

    The Board of Canvassers began meeting last Wednesday, the day after the mid-term election. While many people had hoped to learn that day the winners of two local write-in campaigns, for seats on the Howell and Pinckney school boards, Livingston County Elections Supervisor Joan Runyan tells WHMI the board is about two-thirds complete with its initial review of all 99 precincts and still processing the write-in ballots, which must be tallied to make final determinations.

    But perhaps the most talked about election was for a non-partisan race, where 53rd District Court Judge Theresa Brennan held off a challenge from Dennis Brewer, whose campaign tried to paint Brennan as disrespectful from the bench who didn't treat people fairly. Despite that, Brennan won with a more than 8,000 vote majority.

    Officers targeted sex offenders having outstanding arrest warrants for violations of the Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act and conducted residence checks to verify registered sex offenders were in compliance and living at their reported address. A total of approximately 100 residences were checked and 12 arrests were made by the end of the sweep that was conducted October 28th and 29th.

    The deficit district shuttered the school, along with Pinckney Elementary, to help mitigate costs and make better use of facilities as student enrollment declines. Superintendent Rick Todd says Apple Star LLC has submitted a letter of intent to purchase the building for $250,000 following talks with the district.
